The QuikRite Approach to Publishing
This page is intended to demonstrate how QuickSite software is being used to support web sites. It is not our purpose to design web sites, or to originate material for web sites. Instead, it is our purpose to make the job of maintaining and expanding web sites as easy as it can be. To develop your web site, you might:
Or, if you are in a hurry, use one of our existing templates for now and redesign your site later. If all the 6000 pages in the SwimGold site were to be modified, the entire site could be revised and uploaded to a server in one day. So, you can build now and design later. Or you can redesign later.
SwimGold and the USMS Top Ten --
This site has about 6000 pages and its own domain name and server site.
It serves a national organization with 34,000 members. Data on competitive swimming
is routinely sent for web display, and members from all over the U.S. send stories and
photos on themselves, their teammates, or others they respect and simply want to honor.
The design of this web site is very straightforward and simple. It has no Java, very
few cgi or Perl scripts, no frames, and no fancy graphics. It does have some very good
photographs and an immense amount of data. An exceptional feature of this site is that it also has
an immense number of interconnecting links, maybe 10,000 links connect the 6000 pages.
These links are established automatically by QuickSite software based upon tables
that identify the types of links that can be automatically inserted.
All pages load quickly and are compatible with all browsers. Some examples: a photo of Chester with his All-American swims presented as an html table, a photo of Bill and his kids , and 1997 competitive swimming data on men 90-94 years old displayed pre-formatted. Preformatted data takes up about one-fourth amount of the space that html tables portraying the same data require. This means they load faster, require less server space, and are less trouble to create. To get an idea of the inter-connecting links, follow the links from June's web page . (If the story about the person is long, jump to the bottom to see the links to other information on him or her.)
The SwimGold web site, with its low-tech design, has another advantage. Nearly all of its functionality can be shown on a simple PC. Perl and cgi scripts must be run on a server. So, if you wanted to run them in a kiosk or as an unattended demo at a trade show, you must connect your PC to a server or you must give it internal server capability. The SwimGold web site can be shown anywhere you can carry a PC and without an Internet connection.

The Morikami Museum and Gardens -- This is the most recent web site we've put up.
This web site was originally designed by Internautica, Inc. and is being updated and expanded
using QuickSite software. It has a distinctly different style from the other web sites.
It illustrates well that we can build from website designs created by other designers.
Child Care Resource & Referral, Inc. --
This is a small web site that is a good example of the QuickSite vision.

| People within the organization create source material for the web site. It may be that much of the source material is simply text files (.txt). Here is an example of a simple text file with no enhancement except that which is done by means of the template: Benefits of Music for Children . | QuickSite software is used to generate web pages either using a standard template or using a customized template. |
| One or more people within the organization may wish to learn basic html coding. Here's an example of a page where the text has been enhanced with html code: Working with Children . Note that the style of the header, the navigational aids at the left, and the vertical line are unchanged from the page above (they are part of the template). But, the staff person has made the text highly readable with html lists, bold face, and italics because she has those skills. | Consulting support may be desired to design a custom template or to create special effects like the butterfly Java applet or the map of the U.S.. |

DevPlan, Inc. -- This is the home page for the firm that created the QuickSite software
and that operates the "qkw" server.
Briefs in Urban Economics -- These pages illustrate DevPlan's research and publishing background.
Jonathan's web site -- This is a personal web page maintained by a father and his son using
our familiar blue template.
Skye's Border Collie Home Page --
This is a single web page on the "qkw" server site.
Many of its links are out of date, so browsing beyond this page might not be fruitful.
But we really like the animated .gif which has been loaned to us by its creator.
