Work program
This venture requires that we make it easy for user's to create precisely the reports that they and their management want. And, they must be able to do it with the least possible requirement for learning a special language or skill.
"Gug" & "FHFC" will be achieved with APL programming, but eventually special reports like these must be created by users without APL programming skills. How will we make that possible ? Creative thought must go into this and we won't hastily design how this will work.
Charlie Mason said at lunch on 5/27/03 that the Clearwater firm acquired by Argus provides for their special user formats thru Excel. Excel certainly is the most widely used software for the purposes for which our software is designed. And, Eric Baelen has a highly developed facility for linking Excel with APL. So, Excel could be our way of allowing user's to get exactly what they want. This would require our building a very clever tool for mapping Excel cells to our tables.
Crystal Reports is another idea of how we might do this. Perhaps we could even use Crystal Reports as our mechanism (Davin ?).
Top priority now is to improve the "Gug" and "FHFC" formats, matching source documents and making solid the mixing of inputs and outputs.
